The Department of Latina/Latino Studies celebrates the life and legacy of Rolando Hinojosa-Smith and mourns his passing on April 19, 2022. Prof. Hinojosa-Smith was a University of Illinois alumnus who received his Ph.D. in English from the University of Illinois in 1969. In 2006 Latina/Latino Studies honored Dr. Hinojosa-Smith with an annual Lecture Series. Previously he has been awarded an Alumni Achievement Award by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1988 and subsequently he was awarded an Alumni Achievement Award by the University Alumni Association in 1998. A noted author, whose works include the canonical 'Klail City Death Trip' series, Hinojosa-Smith wrote in English and Spanish, translating his own work. His chronicles of South Texas stand the test of time. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy lives on.
